Beacon of Hope

Beacon of Hope is situated in the Vestal community of South Knoxville and serves our neighbors in need in that district. BOH is an outreach ministry of Church Street UMC, which seeks to serve the spiritual and physical needs of families in the South Knoxville (Vestal) area.

Programs include:

  • Sharing Shop: offering household items for kitchen, home décor, bedding and towels, and toiletry and cleaning items
  • Food Co-Op: provides supplemental food in the “hand up” system of a co-operative (not a food pantry)
  • Benevolence Team: meets once per week to provide utility, rent, and housing assistance to needy families
  • Children’s Program: offering Vacation Bible School and basic needs assistance
  • Getting Ahead Class: follows the Ruby Payne model of “a hand up” not “a hand out”. Application Link for January 2023 Class: https://compassioncoalition.org/get-ahead-classes/#sign-up
  • Faith and Finances Class: focusing on financial literacy
  • …and more throughout the year

BOH is located in the building of the former Vestal United Methodist Church and receives some funding support from Church Street UMC but relies on donations and grants to fully fund its operations.

BOH Code of Ethics

  • Don’t do for others what they have the capacity to do for themselves.
  • Limit one-way giving to truly emergency situations.
  • Hire, lend, or grant assistance to achieve results, foster dignity, and improve self-worth. Request community service in exchange for assistance.
  • Put the interest of the poor above our own agendas or the need to feel worthwhile.
  • Listen to expressed spoken and unspoken needs.
  • Above all else: truly help by doing no harm.
