Weekly Prayers for the Church Street Family

Week of July 19, 2023

Rev. Tim Best

Almighty God, King of the Universe,

We give you thanks for all the blessings of this day. For rain, for a day where the air feels fresher, and a time to give thanks for all the simple blessings and mercies of this life. Fill us with your Spirit, that we might find your peace and in the midst of whatever challenges, sufferings, or trials we face. Renew us by your grace as the rain renews dry soil. Grow in us a deep well of trust, built upon the foundations of your work in and through Christ Jesus.

We pray for the leaders of the world, our nation, and our community. Grant wisdom to all those who hold authority over others. Write mercy upon the hearts of all those who make decisions every day that shapes the lives of others. Shape us to choose and live mercifully, so that when we hold power over others we would treat them as Christ himself would treat them. Purge from our hearts all malice and anger, and fill us instead with a commitment to love and care for others.

Our hearts are heavy for all those who grieve the loss of loved ones. We pray for that day when all death will be swallowed up and defeated. We trust that in Christ we can already experience a glimpse of the eternal life which he promises through his resurrection. Comfort those who grieve, be with those who are sick and grant that your church would be with those who are alone. We praise you for drawing close to your creation, even when we have stepped away from you. Draw us together into your kingdom now and in the age to come. We lift all our joys and concerns to you, gracious Lord.

We invite you to pause with us to hold everyone who is hurting in our hearts. Hear our prayer now as we pray that prayer that Christ our Lord has taught us….

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Weekly Prayers for the Church Street Family

Week of July 12, 2023

Tonight’s prayer is the one offered by Pastor Tim Best last Sunday.

“Come to me all who are weary carrying heavy burdens; I will give you rest ….”

Matthew 11:28

Almighty God,

We praise you for the love and concern you show to all your creation. You have made us to rejoice and to mourn, to cry and to laugh. By the burden of discipleship we are freed from the need to conform to this world. We can name suffering when the world calls us to ignore it. We can rejoice with abandon and hope over even the littlest of gifts. Grant that we would faithfully seek the rest that can be found only in you. For those who are weary, and whose souls are in need of much rest, grant them your peace.

When we think of the burdens of others, our hearts become heavy. We pray for those who are burdened with illness, loneliness, grief, and fear. We pray for those who daily face the burden of oppression and hatred. Fill us with your love that we may offer compassion and understanding to all the world, and all those who carry heavy burdens. Free us to joyful obedience to you that we may work to lift and carry the burdens of others as a sign of your kingdom.

We pray for the world, its nations, leaders, and peoples. For those at war, we pray for peace. We pray for our enemies and those who would count our nation and people as enemies. We pray not only for people and nations, but we pray for every part of the world. Make us mindful stewards of our resources and caretakers of the creatures you have placed alongside us.

Gracious God,

We pray for all of those who have been burdened by death. We place our trust and hope in you, that you will raise them and us to new life. Help us to keep before us the lives of those who have trusted your yoke in previous generations, that we might learn from them how to follow you.

We pray for …

  • a niece grieving the loss of her beloved aunt; prayers for all of the family she nurtured.
  • a church member awaiting results from a biopsy

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Rev. Catherine Nance

You know us so well, O God. It is tempting to jump down to the prayer concerns—not stopping to pray. We want to see the concerns. We ask, “Is it anyone I know?  Is my request listed there?’

We are thankful for the opportunity and gift of intercessory prayer, but make us mindful first of the posture of prayer before we focus on the details of the Who and the What. Make us pause to remember that prayer is your gift to us. Help us to stop, be quiet, and acknowledge your presence and your grace in our lives. We open ourselves to you, O God, before we make the lists of things we need or want to do in response to these concerns. Help us to feel the nurturing you offer us as we wait to formalize tasks.

We are amazed at your omniscience – that you know what is on our heart and on the hearts and minds of everyone. How do you hear all those prayers? There we go again! We want to figure out how prayer ‘works,’ instead of simply basking in your presence. How does it work, O God? We pray for individuals who are near and dear to us and we know all about their struggles. We pray for people we do not know – a name on a prayer list, a friend of a colleague. They say our prayers make a difference. We pray for ’your world’ and mention mass shootings and Ukraine. Do they make a difference, O God?

Forgive us when we see prayer as a means to an end – a process to a result. We know that prayer can make a difference. We pray that the difference will be in us O God. We pray that in taking this time to be open to your Spirit, to make room for your breath in our being, that we will be transformed.

So now, we take the list below, O God, and place them in your heart, knowing that they are already there! Somehow, our heart is opened as we reach towards yours. Is that how prayer works, O God?

Forgive us – love us – grant us your grace –

Thank you for the transformation that praying for one another can bring.

We pray for ….

  • A wife recovering from brain surgery and preparing for treatments
  • A man looking for a partner in life; someone to share his commitment to growing in relationship with Christ
  • A friend who is suffering after a stroke and dealing with many physical and mental problems
  • Holston Conference clergy with new church appointments beginning this week; we pray for churches who are receiving new pastors.
  • A mother waiting on test results; prayers for her and her family that they not be anxious
  • A member with lung cancer; recovering from surgery to remove brain tumor. Now awaiting treatment. Be with him in his waiting. May he feel your strength.
  • Two family members who are going through a difficult disagreement; may they find their way back to peace.
  • A wife/mother who begins dialysis today after much trauma to her body; may she feel the presence of prayers around her

We give thanks for …..

  • A neighbor’s successful surgery – double lung transplant! Doctors said it went well and they can see significant improvements in her heart! So thankful!
  • The support Stephen Ministers give
  • Volunteers who work with our youth as they prepare for MAD
  • A beautiful wedding! Friends and family being able to gather to celebrate!

We continue to pray for ….

  • A young father healing at home after surgery and chemotherapy
  • A couple awaiting birth in midst of high-risk pregnancy; may they feel God’s peace
  • Couples who want to be parents … waiting on IVF procedures … waiting ….
  • Those who are in rehab; thankful for the therapy that is offered but missing being at home
  • Those who are grieving
  • A man struggling with severe depression; may he find peace. Prayers for his family who are at a loss!
  • A young adult whose father died unexpectedly.

Amen.

We will be working with Wesley House Community Center, Beacon of Hope, Emerald Youth Foundation, Operation Backyard, and many of the ministries within Church Street. Students will have the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of mission work. Join us in prayer as we ask for protection, stamina, joy, and impact as we do our best to love our neighbors well.

As always, if you have any questions, send them my way! Looking forward to a great week together!

Grace and peace,

Jenny

P.S. You will probably receive another email or two from me before the week is done.

Week of June 28, 2023

Rev. Andy Ferguson

This prayer was given by Rev. Andy Ferguson on Sunday, June 25 during the Sunday School hour in the Open Door class.

A Prayer for Holy Wonder

God of Creation’s first morning,

God of our children’s first prayer.

We confess that we hardly dare to believe in the holy any longer.

The world counts value in dollars – even though a dollar doesn’t buy much

          — even at the Dollar General Store.

Existence is measured in tons of concrete required,

while heart and commitment go unnoticed.

Too often, the solemn ceremonies by which we marry our sweethearts

or bury our dead or baptize our babies,

Seem more like pretty distractions, counting for little.

Instead of a binding commitment made before the God of the Universe.

And doubting your holiness, we doubt our humanness, our realness,

         even our eternal worth.

Rise up, O God, stir across the land once again.

Call the thunder to announce your coming!

Silence the proud claims of kings and presidents by your voice,

Send prophets to declare, “Thus saith the Lord…”

Send a friend to inquire, “How it is with your soul?”

Let your holiness, O God, be seen — that we may believe once more.

Cure our chosen blindness to your movement.

Silence us by your certain coming.

Scare us to death that we may catch a glimpse of what it is to live.

Then, we will live our days with a sense of expectation.

We will bear witness to all that we have seen.

We will live confident that with you, “All things are possible.”

We will exult in your certain presence like children dancing in a summer rain shower.

Let us see once more, O God of heaven and earth,

You — bending near to hear the prayers of children,

You — waiting patiently for us to turn and realize…

You – going before us in the march to a better world.

Let us see you,

–as clearly as Moses saw the burning bush on the mountain,

–And Isaiah saw the vision of heaven.

–As clearly as the disciples saw the face of Jesus.

It is in the Holy Name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

We pray for ….

  • A brother who entered hospice care this week; prayers for his sister
  • A daughter grieving her father’s unexpected death; but celebrating the blessings of last visit and release from physical infirmities
  • A granddaughter who is grieving the death of her grandfather – just one year after the death of her grandmother. Grateful for precious memories and the love of family!

  • Limited side effects from chemo for a son; continued prayers for healing as third round begins
  • Operation Backyard who rebuilt my deck

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Rev. Catherine Nance

On this night of Summer Solstice, I am inspired by the hymn writer, Kathleen Thomerson, and offer her words here ….

I want to walk as a child of the light. I want to follow Jesus.

God set the starts to give light to the world. The star of my life is Jesus!

I want to see the brightness of God. I want to look at Jesus.

Clear Sun of Righteousness, shine on my path, and show me the way to the Father.

In him there is no darkness at all!

The night and the day are both a like.

The Lamb is the light of the city of God.

Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus!

[UMH #206, K. Thomerson, 1966]

O God of Light, with your voice you called forth a way for us to see out of the darkness. Your voice gives us a path and direction.

We thank you for the gift of creation which gives us a sense of rhythm, a way to keep time; we are thankful for both day and night. There is something healing, though, about the sun, Creator God! Thank you for the way you have ordered the planets. Thank you for scientists and astronomers who study the skies and help us to understand that we are not the center of the universe! Thank you for the creation of this planet that offers us life!

O God, for those who are experiencing darkness of any kind, reveal your light!

Darkness of despair, bring the light of hope!

Darkness of disease, shine your healing light!

Darkness of shame; bring redemption and release!

Darkness of sin, shine mercy!

Darkness of regret, shine new beginnings

Darkness of death, give us the assurance of eternal life.

We thank you for the extra bit of daylight today, O God!

May your light shine in us and through us!

May our living always reflect the Light of your Love!

We offer prayers of intercession for ….

  • A couple going through IVF; prayers for good health!

Rev. Tim Best

God of Abraham,

We thank you for the many blessings you pour out upon us. We are thankful for summer camps for children, sunny days outside, rainy nights that seem to leave the world refreshed the next morning. We are thankful that you desire to bless the world, and draw each of us close to you. Help us to hear the ways you are calling each of us. Help us to name our blessings and to share them with the world.

We pray for those who do not feel blessed. We pray for those who are struggling. For those who struggle with sickness, with loneliness, with relationships, and those who are facing any sort of trouble. We pray for those who are oppressed or ignored. You called Abraham from of his home and promised him a future. Be with those who have no home and worry about their future. May we see the blessedness in all people, and share the promise of your future with all the world. Abraham and Sarah trusted in you as they left everything they knew. Help us to trust in you and  be willing to follow you wherever you call us.

How wonderful it was to see our future, the youth of Church Street, lead the music in worship this week. We are truly a blessed community to have dedicated staff, volunteers, and students, committed to praising and glorifying you through song. We are so thankful that our youth returned safely from their choir tour. We know that many others were blessed by their performances last week, just as we were blessed to hear them this past Sunday. Continue to bless and teach our youth and children through all of our programs this summer. We have already been so richly blessed by our children and youth, watch over them as they continue to bless and teach us as a church family.

Gracious God, we know that Jesus Christ is the fullest revelation of your love for Abraham and for the world. Through Jesus the whole world is blessed by Abraham. In Jesus the whole world is invited into Abraham’s family. In Jesus we see that you keep your promises and that even when it seems that only death remains, your love bursts forth into newness of life. Grant that we may always cling to the hope of your mercy and grace.

We pray for ….

  • A daughter who is having a difficult pregnancy; prayers for her family. Prayers that migraines will cease and/or that docs can offer alternative medication.
  • A member who had surgery for broken leg; prayers for healing and patience
  • A young mother
  • So many in our church family who are dealing with a variety of diagnoses, waiting on tests, sorting out medical lingo; prayers that they not be overwhelmed by info but surrounded by God’s Calm.
  • A friend who had spinal surgery on Monday.
  • A mother/grandmother who had knee replacement on Tuesday.
  • A father in ICU at UT hospital; prayers for strength and healing
  • Couples in our church who are wanting to have children and who are waiting …
  • A mother in the unexpected death of her son; prayers for his work colleagues also.

We give thanks for ….

  • Excellent rehab after surgery; so thankful for the good options we have!
  • Friends who have shown support since injury.
  • Answered prayers on cancer surgery! Thankful for the wonderful medical team and good friends!

Help us to always see the blessings in our lives, as we pray that prayer the Jesus taught us…

Week of June 7, 2023

Rev. Catherine Nance

Good evening friends! I am at Lake Junsaluksa, North Carolina attending the Holston Annual Conference along with Pastor Tim and our lay members. It has been a glorious time of worship and hearing reports about what is happening in our conference. “Recalibrating” is the key word for the conference and forward-looking positivity is the energy in the room. I want to share with you today some of the prayers that have been offered here. You are part of this meeting although you are not here physically. The Holy Spirit always connects us through prayer. – Pastor Catherine

BREAKTHROUGH PRAYER for Holston Conference (You can insert ‘CSUMC’ or ‘our family’ or ‘me’ where the prayer mentions ‘conference.’)

Gracious God, we know that you are with us and you are for us. Together we pray:

  • Pour out your spirit upon Holston Conference to renew and revive us in new ways.
  • Reveal where the Holy Spirit is leading us as a conference and as your people.
  • Break through our barriers, opening new doors of dreams, hopes, and possibilities beyond what we know and can imagine.
  • Grant us the courage to walk through the doors you are opening.
  • Stir us to seek you first and root us deeply in your will and way.
  • Renew, revive, and replant this conference, unleashing new and abundant life.  In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Prayer offered at ordination service (we were reminded by our Bishop that we have ALL been called at our baptism to be in ministry). This was the prayer for those ordained elders:

Give to these your servants the grace and power they need to serve you in this ministry. Make them faithful pastors, patent teachers, and wise counselors. Enable them to serve without reproach, to proclaim the gospel of salvation, to administer the sacraments of the new covenant, and to offer with all your people spiritual sacrifices acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Below is a portion of the prayer offered at the Memorial Service where we remembered clergy and spouses who have died since last year’s Annual Conference. Many of us who read these Wednesday prayers continue in our grief.

Months or years may have passed, and still we feel near to them. Our hearts yearn for them. Though bitter grief has softened, duller pain abides; for the place where once they stood is empty now. The links of life are broken, but the links for love and longing cannot break. Their souls are bound up in ours forever. We see them now with the eye of memory, their faults forgiven, their virtues grown larger. So does goodness live, and weakness fade from sight. We remember them with gratitude and bless their names. Their memory is a blessing forever.

Dear God who hears our prayers whether they are whispered by an individual or read in unison in sanctuary, we thank you for the privilege we have in being able to communicate with you. We are thankful you desire to be in communion with us. Stir up in us the acknowledgement of our responsibility in carrying out and living out the prayers we bring before you. In the power of our Risen Savior we pray, Amen.

We pray for ….

  • A wife who began chemo treatments this week; may she feel God’s healing presence
  • A Soup Kitchen guest who has been attempting to get a bus ticket to Phoenix; he has the money – just not the technology that is required these days. Bless all those who do not have access to email, internet and who struggle to do transactions without.
  • A brother who has moved to skilled care; prayers for him and for family as he makes decisions about palliative care.
  • For a newly wed couple; may their life be one of contentment and joy.
  • For a son undergoing chemotherapy for colon cancer
  • A young father having cancer surgery tomorrow at Vanderbilt; prayers for his wife and daughter and all the family as they wait.

  • A church member having knee replacement surgery
  • Prayers for one going through IVF cycle

  • Our leaders – local and national

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Weekly Prayers for the Church Street Family

Week of May 31, 2023

Rev. Catherine Nance

Ah … summer! Thank you, God, for the season of summer vacation! Even for those who are not ‘in school,’ there seems to be an energy in the air. A spirit of relaxation, a spirit of exploring, a spirit of anticipating good things! Thank you for this shift in our spiritual atmosphere!

We also know how quickly high expectations for a season can be dashed by one small thing. So we pray for realistic expectations! We pray for patience and for understanding! May family gatherings be nurturing …. May visits between grandparents and grandchildren be life-giving to both …. Give parents the courage to be honest with their children about budgets and expenses … give us the eyesight to see the beauty and joy in front of us ….

We put so much pressure on ourselves to make everything ‘picture perfect.’ Keep us mindful of the people around us and that your grace that abounds. You love us as we are; may we extend that same grace to ourselves and others.

We pray for our Bishop and the District Superintendents this weekend as they prepare for Holston Annual Conference on Sunday. May our clergy and lay members be inspired and renewed as they worship, pray, and fellowship together. We thank you for this church, gracious God. We thank you for the worship that happens on Sunday mornings in the nave and online and how it connects us to each other through the week.

May the words we speak and sing on Sundays, transform our very beings throughout the week.

We pray for …

  • The families of all those involved in the crash at the corner of Henley & Main today.
  • A son who is beginning chemotherapy for colon cancer. So far, he has tolerated it well. Prayers for the next six months that this treatment brings healing.
  • A wife (and new grandmother) recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Chemo treatments begin soon. Prayers for healing.
  • A friend who is having to move to Arkansas to be with family. Prayers for safe travels and prayers for discernment about next steps and how long. Prayers for peace about the future.
  • A family who is grieving a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother who brought joy to all! Thankful for peaceful passing into Light Eternal and for the JOY she gave and leaves behind!
  • A joyous and safe Parish Youth Choir Tour; prayers for all of the singers and leaders. May they be a blessing to all they meet!

We offer thanksgivings for …

  • Those who loaded ‘food buckets’ and got them to Cokesbury UMC this morning. Praying for the families in Zimbabwe who will receive them in a few months.
  • Being able to attend grandchild’s graduation; thankful for good health to travel.
  • Healthy pregnancy; prayers for little ones as they grow!
  • Prayers of thanksgiving for the medical technology and all the tests and advances that reveal better information sooner; but also prayers as people process the information. Prayers for discernment and guidance for doctors and all who interpret information for us.

We continue to pray for …

  • A young father who will have surgery on June 8 to remove abdominal tumor; prayers that this surgery plus the chemotherapy brings healing to his body. Prayers for him and his family.
  • A friend who had been hospitalized; prayers for healing from MRSA.
  • A young woman whose husband’s funeral was Sunday. They held a funeral for their infant son three years ago. Lord, in your mercy ….
  • A mother and wife in the hospital with pneumonia; prayers for oxygen levels to increase.

Amen.
