We invite you to worship with us at Church Street UMC

We invite you to visit with us and share your presence with members and friends of a relatively large congregation of persons. Those who worship and attend here regularly also enjoy a warmth and friendship typical of much smaller churches. All of us share the theology of the "warm heart" . . . "If your heart is as my heart, then give me your hand!"

Our primary emphasis at Church Street UMC centers around experiencing and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. We study the Bible for a record of how God relates with His People. We listen to the Holy Spirit as we respond to God's Will for our time. The program of Church Street UMC offers a variety of opportunities for ministry and mission throughout the city, the nation and the world!

Midweek Noon Communion Service

During your busy week, come to Church Street for a brief period of quiet worship in our chapel at noon. Fashioned much as the service in which John Wesley himself would have participated, this service includes readings from the Holy Scriptures, responsive Psalms, prayer, a short homily, and the observance of Holy Communion. Childcare is available by calling Sue Isbell (521-0282).

Community Worship

Every Thursday people who spend their nights with no place to sleep but on benches and in doorways and people who are staying in homeless shelters come to Church Street UMC for a unique worship service. Begun several years ago, the initial goal of the service was to provide spiritual nourishment in addition to the physical nourishment offered by the church at our weekly soup kitchen.

This informal service occurs every Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. in the Commons (Church Life Center 120). A great deal of time is spent on fellowship with a special gathering to pass the peace, a brief meditation that is often participatory, community prayer time, and group singing where folks get to choose their favorite hymns. Following the service, refreshments are provided by Sunday school classes and UMW circles.
