Missions: Loving Our Neighbors Near and Far

Church Street UMC takes Jesus' commandment to love our neighbor seriously through a variety of ministries in our church, our community and around the world.

Answering the call to mission and service may take you across the street or across the sea. It could take you to faraway nations or to your own neighborhood. We encounter people every day who need to hear the good news of the Gospel. You may contact Darryll Rasnake by email or phone at 521-0279 or Marc Gamble (Director of Traveling Mission) by email or by phone at 521-0287.   Make a real difference in the lives of others...and in yours.

There are a variety of opportunities for individuals to be in mission...from donating money or items to spending time assisting with the particular need. We urge you to do your part to help others. Following are just a few of the opportunities at Church Street.

NOTE: Church Street members are also involved in additional Local, Regional and International mission opportunities. For more volunteer needs, check out the Volunteer Hot List.

Soup Kitchen
Each Thursday Church Street volunteers serve a warm meal and Christian love to the area homeless. Visit the Soup Kitchen page for information about how this important ministry began and how you can support it.

Benevolence
Each Monday morning a dedicated group of Church Streeters meet (by appointment only) with homeless and needy persons in the community who are needing help with their limited resources. Please check out our benevolence brochure for specific details about this outreach ministry and how you can be involved.

Hunger Helper Market
A Church Street favorite, the Hunger Helper Market is open during the summer months in the breezeway as Church Streeters donate an array of fresh produce, flowers, baked goods, etc. for purchase by other Church Streeters and visitors. Proceeds are donated to hunger-related charities. Be on the lookout for the Hunger Market season to begin in late May.

Thanksgiving Baskets
This Singles Ministry project stocks and delivers baskets of foods to needy families and individuals.

United Methodist Women (UMW) Service Circle
This group of ladies makes baby hats for newborns at local hospitals and clothing items for nursing home and Lakeshore residents. For more information about United Methodist Women, visit the UMW page.

Mitten Trees
During the season of Advent several trees are filled with gloves, mittens, scarves and hats that are donated to our inner-city guests who come to Community Christmas.

M.A.D. in the City
(Making a Difference). Church Street youth provide a Vacation Bible School-type of experience for children at Wesley House, an inner city community ministry sponsored by The United Methodist Church. For more information about Church Street youth, visit the Youth Ministry page.
