Holy Hilarity

Bishop Looney invites you to an evening of Holy Hilarity on Sunday, October 9. We will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner in Parish Hall. After the meal, Bishop Looney will share humorous stories as we continue our stewardship theme, "The Joy of Generosity."

The menu for dinner is: roast chicken, rice pilaf, green beans, garden salad, dinner rolls, and desserts. Cost is $7 for adults, $4 for children under 10. Please make a meal reservation by calling 524-2048 or e-mailing reservations@churchstreetumc.org.

A Service of Choral Evensong

Join us on Sunday, October 2, at 6 p.m. in the Nave for a Service of Choral Evensong. On this night, the combined voices from our own Parish Adult Choir, along with the choirs from our downtown neighbors, will fill the Nave. Featured choirs include Church Street UMC, First Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church, and St. John?s Episcopal. After the service we will host a dessert reception for our guests in Parish Hall. We ask that you please bring a dessert to share. Your dessert may be brought to Parish Hall anytime prior to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Blessing of the Animals

This Sunday, September 25, we will continue the Church Street tradition of Blessing of the Animals. All are invited to bring their pets to this unique service of worship where we thank God for our furry, fuzzy, feathered and/or scaly friends. The service begins at 3 p.m. in the Courtyard and pets receive a blessing by the Church Street clergy. Pets should be on a leash or in a cage if appropriate, and should be well-mannered. We hope you will join us as we celebrate our faithful companions in the tradition of St. Francis of Assisi and his great love for all God?s creatures.

Coming Home Celebration

This Sunday, September 18, we will celebrate our 200th year with one combined worship service at 10:30 a.m. (Please note there will be no Sunday School.) The Adult, Youth and Children?s Choirs will all be a part of this service, along with the Tennessee Brass. The worship service will include a commissioned hymn by Jim Rogers, as well as a Bicentennial Anthem written by Robert Powell. Bishop Ken Carder will offer the sermon and we have invited former senior and associate pastors who have served at Church Street to be a part of the day.

Student Retreat to Sterchi Lodge

All 4th & 5th graders are invited to travel to Sterchi Lodge on September 16-17 for a time of fellowship, digging into the word, and spending time out in God?s beautiful creation. We will leave around 4 p.m. on Friday and return between 3-4 p.m. on Saturday. The cost is $40 per child.

Jack Neely Lectures

Join us each Sunday in August as the Bicentennial Committee presents local author and historian Jack Neely who will share a four-week lecture series on the history of Knoxville. The lectures will be held in the Nave on Sundays, August 7, 14, 21, and 28, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Prior to the lectures, the Nave will be open for tours from 1-2:30 p.m. The lecture topics include architecture, literature, immigration and music. We hope you will invite a friend and join us for these free events.

Call to Prayer for General Conference

Imagine General Conference 2016 bathed in prayer. That?s the vision of the Council of Bishops of The United Methodist Church. Between January 1, 2016 and May 10, 2016, all 131 annual conferences around the globe will offer their prayers on one particular day for the upcoming gathering of 864 delegates from around the world.

The Holston Conference's day is Tuesday, April 12. On that day, 48 members of our congregation will be entering our Prayer Room at 15-minute intervals (from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.) to lift up petitions for guidance and wisdom for all who will be taking part in these most important proceedings. If you would like to be included in this prayer initiative, please contact Jan Wade at jbwade@churchstreetumc.org. In addition, the clergy will lead a prayer service beginning at noon in the Chapel. You are invited to come and lift your prayers for General Conference.
