Healing Service

"Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord...Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective (5:14,16)."
The writer of the Epistle of James reminds us of the power of turning to the Lord in times of illness and unrest, and offers us the privilege of participating in healing prayers and anointing. Perhaps you are weary in mind and spirit, perhaps your physical challenges seem overwhelming, or maybe you feel the need for forgiveness, or desire to pray on behalf of a loved one. If so, you are invited to a meditative Service of Healing and Forgiveness on Sunday, January 22, at 5:45 p.m. that includes liturgy, prayers, blessing with holy oil, and the restorative music of Rachel Schlafer-Parton. (For more information, contact Pastor Jan at 521-0264).

This is similar to our Advent devotional booklet, but it only contains devotions for the 7 Sundays in Lent and all the days of Holy Week, including Easter.

The devotion should be approximately 250 words, including a title, referenced scripture, and a prayer. Ash Wednesday is March 1, so please submit your entries ASAP to Caroline Lamar ( Thank you for your participation in this Lenten ministry!

Women's Bible Study

The Gospel of Mark-The Jesus We're Aching For: by Lisa Harper
God's heart is moved by your cries for help, your shouts of joy, your unspoken worries. We know Him to be a God of unparalleled power and authority, but Mark's account of Jesus paints Him as a deeply personal and intimate God, too. Follow Jesus through His days of early ministry all the way to the cross. The Gospel of Mark: The Jesus We're Aching For partners the compassion of Jesus with the passion of Christ. We will learn more about Jesus' earthly ministry and how it impacts us today. This seven-week study with workbook and DVD begins on Wednesday, January 11, and runs through February 22. We meet from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in room 201-A. The cost of the workbook is $14. Childcare is provided. The workbook will be available to pick up in the church office January 3. Please contact Juanita Cowles by email at for information and to sign-up.

Christmas Eve Services

On Christmas Eve, we will have four candlelight communion services at Church Street - each one designed to meet a slightly different need. We hope that one of these services can become part of your Christmas tradition.
Noon - The Midday Christmas Eve Service
This service, which includes candlelight and communion, is designed for those who want to come out for worship and get home before dark or have additional travel plans. We will sing many of the traditional Christmas carols. This service lasts one hour.
3 p.m. - The Family Service
This service, which includes candlelight and communion, is designed for families with young children. This service is designed around the Children's Sermon; the children are actively involved in several ways. This service lasts about 45 minutes.
5 p.m. & 10:30 p.m.
These are the traditional services of Christmas Eve that everyone knows well. The times shown are the beginning of the musical prelude. The liturgy begins 30 minutes later in each case. The Parish Adult Choir will sing Vivaldi's Magnificat in G Minor accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Each service usually lasts about 90 minutes, including the musical prelude. A nursery will be provided at 5 p.m.
